Personal Reflection: Internalizing the Problem

Reflecting on My Journey: The Importance of Holistic Education

Growing up, I always felt something was missing. I wanted to be a writer, inspired by the words of John Singleton in Boyz n the Hood: "either they don't know, don't show, or don't care about what's going on in the hood." Writing and reading were my ways of trying to make a change. But when I got to school and met my husband, I realized I could do more. I wanted to major in psychology or neurology to understand our minds better and help us rethink and handle ourselves differently.

As I finished my master's and went to medical school, I realized the issues were not just internal. My mother and stepdad were hardworking and took great care of their home. Yet, I could barely sell her home for $30,000 when she passed away. Meanwhile, a friend sold her home for $600,000 after paying $200,000 for it. This disparity in generational wealth is stark and highlights systemic inequities.

Generational Wealth and Systemic Inequities

The disparity in generational wealth is a common story in many communities. Systemic inequities prevent wealth from staying within certain communities. Homes in some neighborhoods often do not appreciate in value at the same rate as those in others. This disparity in property values is just one example of how systemic issues affect generational wealth.

For instance, my mother spent over $1 million on her home, but I could barely sell it for $30,000. In contrast, my friend sold her home for $600,000 after paying $200,000 for it. This generational wealth gap is a direct result of systemic inequities that have been in place for a long time.

The Need for Safe Educational Spaces

We need safe spaces to educate kids. We need the assets in their communities to match, giving them a reason to go to school rather than pursue limited options. Holistic education can play a crucial role in addressing these issues by providing a comprehensive approach to learning that includes emotional, social, and spiritual growth.

Creating safe educational spaces means investing in schools in underserved communities, providing resources and support for students, and ensuring that the curriculum reflects diverse histories and experiences. It means creating an environment where students feel valued and supported, and where they can see a future for themselves beyond the limited options often presented to them.

Conclusion

In the midst of a flat green landscape, a massive tornado touches down under dark, swirling storm clouds, creating an intense and dramatic atmosphere. This powerful image serves as a metaphor for the importance of holistic education and the peril of remaining silent in the face of necessary change. Just as a tornado disrupts the calm, silence in the face of injustice or ignorance can allow destructive forces to grow unchecked. At the RAAC Retreat Center, we believe in the transformative power of holistic education to address these challenges head-on, fostering awareness, action, and positive change.

The experience of many communities is marked by systemic inequities and generational challenges. By internalizing these problems, we often fail to see the broader systemic issues at play. Holistic education can help break this cycle by providing individuals with the tools they need to understand and address these issues. By nurturing well-rounded individuals who are aware of their history and empowered to speak out against injustices, we can create a more just and equitable society.
