The Power in Silence

Part 1: Holistic Education and Its Impact

Introduction to Holistic Education

Holistic education is an approach that nurtures all aspects of a person's being. It goes beyond traditional academic learning to include emotional, social, and spiritual growth. This comprehensive form of education fosters critical thinking, empathy, and resilience, equipping individuals to navigate complex social and political landscapes.

The benefits of holistic education are manifold:

  • Comprehensive Development: It addresses the intellectual, emotional, social, physical, artistic, creative, and spiritual potentials of individuals.

  • Critical Thinking: Encourages students to think critically and independently.

  • Empathy and Compassion: Fosters a sense of empathy and compassion towards others.

  • Resilience: Builds resilience and the ability to cope with challenges.

  • Active Citizenship: Prepares individuals to be active and engaged citizens.

By focusing on the interconnectedness of individuals with their communities and the environment, holistic education encourages active participation in societal issues. It empowers people to break the silence that often surrounds political dangers and injustices.

Personal Reflection: My Journey with Holistic Education

As an African American, I always felt something was missing. As a kid, I wanted to be a writer. Like John Singleton said in Boyz n the Hood, it felt like "either they don't know, don't show, or don't care about what's going on in the hood." I wrote vigorously and read because I thought that would be my way to make a change. But when I got to school and met my husband, I thought I could do more. I wanted to major in psychology or neurology to figure out what was wrong with our brains and to help us rethink and handle ourselves differently, accepting that the problem was all internal within Black people.

As I finished my master's and went to medical school, and as I lived longer, I realized it's not just internal. My mother was an amazing, hardworking woman, and so was my stepdad. They bought and paid for their home and took very good care of it. Yet, I could barely sell her home for $30,000 when she died. Meanwhile, my friend sold her home for $600,000 when they paid $200,000, and it wasn't even paid off. That's generational wealth. My mother spent over $1 million on her home, but I will never see that. Every rich Black person, the wealth does not stay with them because systematically our money, assets, and person are not a protected class.

I am not lazy. My ancestors were not lazy. They were more than the trauma I see. How can we change our children if the story is the same? We need a safe space to educate kids. We need the assets in their communities to match, giving them a reason to go to school rather than be a drug dealer or a rapper because those are the only people who have money. Systematically, this hurts us all.

The Power in Silence

A delicate pink flower emerges resiliently from a crack in the concrete, standing tall against the blurred backdrop of a bustling city. This image symbolizes the beauty and strength found in struggle, illustrating how even in the harshest environments, growth and hope can prevail. At The Ripple Inc. in DFW, we believe in the transformative power of holistic education to nurture resilience and foster comprehensive development. By addressing the intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of individuals, holistic education empowers them to thrive and make a positive impact on their communities.

Holistic education has influenced my life profoundly. It has helped me understand the importance of nurturing all aspects of a person's being and the interconnectedness of individuals with their communities. This understanding has driven me to create programs and initiatives that focus on holistic development, such as the Ripple Athletic and Academic Education Center, where we aim to provide a unique training and learning environment that allows students to feel God's abundance.

Impact on Society

Holistic education can empower individuals to break the silence around political dangers and injustices. By fostering critical thinking, empathy, and resilience, holistic education prepares individuals to be active and engaged citizens who are not afraid to speak out against injustices.

For example, during the Holocaust, many people stood by and did not help the Jewish populations or other targeted groups. They did not protect or try to stop the atrocities before they happened. This widespread complicity and silence allowed the Nazi regime to carry out its genocidal policies with little resistance from the general population.

Similarly, the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, was a stark reminder of the power of silence and complicity. As Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for over nine minutes, bystanders recorded the event but were unable to intervene effectively. This tragic incident sparked global protests against police brutality and systemic racism.

I internalized the problem. I even remember when I was very young, I wanted to be white because I didn't want all these problems. I send my kids to school with white kids, not because they are better or smarter, but because their communities are a protected class. Being near them means safety. But it's a safety without advancement, a safety without any benefits—that's the definition of privilege.

Holistic education can help break this cycle by providing individuals with the tools they need to understand and address systemic issues. By nurturing well-rounded individuals who are aware of their history and empowered to speak out against injustices, we can create a more just and equitable society.
